Out of Town Patients

The practice offers unique procedures with special focus on ultra-minimally invasive spine surgery and motion preservation. We are proud to offer various surgical services to our out-of-town patients seeking state-of-the-art spinal solutions. If you are traveling from out of town for your procedure, we have provided instructions to help make your visit as smooth as possible.

  • We offer virtual tele-visits prior to your in-person appointment to allow for efficient care and minimize the need for multiple trips.
  • If you are scheduled for surgery, inquire about the possibility of admission the day prior to surgery.
  • We strongly advise patients to stay local for a period of time after surgery in case of urgent medical needs.

Preparing for Your Procedure

Pre-Operative Instructions

  • Blood Sugar Management:
    • Maintain strict control of your blood sugar levels, especially if you have diabetes.
    • If your HbA1c is above 7%, surgery may be postponed. Please discuss this with your physician.
  • Nutritional Optimization:
    • Increase your protein intake by incorporating high-protein, low-sugar foods (e.g., protein shakes) into your daily diet.
    • Consult your primary care physician to ensure the safety and suitability of this dietary change.
  • Physical Preparation:
    • Work towards achieving an ideal body mass index (BMI) of 25.

    • Assess and optimize your bone health through a bone density scan.
    • Strengthen your core muscles.
  • Supplementation:
    • Consider supplements that support wound healing, such as Vitamin C and Zinc.
  • Medication and Supplement Discontinuation:
    • Discontinue all blood-thinning medications, including aspirin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen, naproxen (Aleve), and other over the counter pain relievers (Advil).
    • Stop taking blood-thinning supplements, including fish oil and other natural supplements, as they can increase the risk of bleeding during surgery.
  • Tobacco and Nicotine Cessation:
    • Refrain from smoking, chewing, or vaping any tobacco and nicotine products for at least 2-3 months before and after surgery. These products significantly impair wound healing and increase the risk of complications.
  • Constipation Management:
    • If you experience constipation, ensure you are on appropriate medications before surgery to prevent post-operative worsening.
  • Day of Surgery:
    • Arrive at the surgical facility 3 hours prior to your scheduled surgery time to avoid delays or cancellations.
    • Bring all relevant imaging studies on a CD on the day of surgery.
    • Be sure to bring your brace with you to the pre-operative suite if you were fitted for one.
    • It’s ok to be nervous! Relax and let the team help you through this journey.
